This weekend, my friends and I traveled to Valencia, Spain, for a festival called Las Fallas. I was with Jenna (from NY), Angela (from Honduras), and Alejandra (from Costa Rica). We stayed at an apartment on the beach with Hali and her roommates, Carolina, Daniella, Raquel, and Julia. We had a great time!
There is really no US tradition that is comparable to Las Fallas. It was incredible! In short, the people of Valencia spend the entire year and millions of euros designing and creating over 400 large statues, that look like parade floats, and then they burn them. They party in the streets all week, and then they burn Las Fallas to celebrate the coming of spring.
It was one of the craziest, messiest, "funnest," most interesting "parties" I've ever been to. It was like:
-the crowds of Disney World (plus)
-the craziness of a Bachelorette party (plus)
-the drunkenness of a college party (plus)
-the organization of a field trip (plus)
-the fireworks of July 4th, on steroids (plus)
-dancing in the streets, as if you’re in a club (plus)
-partying in the streets, as if there’s no tomorrow (plus)
-giant statue figures, like parade floats (plus)
-fire, like a forest fire.
For those of you wondering what a Falla is, I will show you. Right now, I am simply going to post a picture of the crazy lights and crazy people that were at Las Fallas, along with a picture of every Falla that I saw. Stay tuned for another blog post with more details about our adventures in Valencia ;)
